The term "disinfection" in relation to water treatment specifically refers to the process of eliminating or inactivating harmful microorganisms that can pose risks to human health. This is a critical step in the water treatment process, ensuring that the water is safe for consumption and use. Disinfection methods include the use of chemicals like chlorine, ultraviolet light, or ozone treatment, all aimed at killing bacteria, viruses, and parasites that may be present in the water supply.

Understanding disinfection is vital because untreated water can harbor pathogens that lead to waterborne diseases, impacting public health. Effective disinfection not only protects individual consumers but also plays a crucial role in maintaining overall community health standards and preventing outbreaks of water-related illnesses.
